Inspirational lines, read in context
Lines that give a character courage, steadiness or a new way of seeing their situation, and that still hold up when you know exactly where they sit in the story.
An inspirational entry is not a poster. We start from the scene: what the character has lost or risked, who they are speaking to and what the film does next. A line earns its place here only if it stays encouraging once all of that is on the table. When a film undercuts its own stirring line, our commentary says so.
Some lines that sound stirring fail our rubric. We leave out lines that make revenge the answer, that glamorise dangerous stunts, or that read as medical, financial or legal advice, along with anything that celebrates alcohol, drugs, tobacco or gambling, or anything political or communal.
For the craft behind lines that travel, read Why some film lines become motivational. For the full exclusion list, see What we leave out.
