Clean comedy, explained

Funny lines that work without a target. Each entry explains the setup, the turn and the timing that make the laugh, in our own words.

A comic line on paper is a joke with its machinery removed. Our comedy entries put the machinery back: the expectation the scene built, the word that flips it, the character logic that makes the line sound reasonable to the person saying it, and the pause or reaction that lets the laugh land.

Clean means more than no swearing. We rule out humour drawn from religion, caste, region, accent, ethnicity, skin colour, gender, sexuality, disability, body, age or class; innuendo and double meanings; profanity of any strength; and harassment played as a joke. Every comedy entry is checked by a second reviewer who did not write it.

Read How a comic line lands for the craft, and What we leave out for the full rubric.
